Tantasques
Thank you Peter Frei for your history on this site. You are right , this was one of the earliest colonial land grants and was 8 miles square. Winthrop believed there was silver in the area and was disapointed when the mine did not produce much of it.

There are 10 people left who speak the Nipmuc Dialect of the Algonquin Language. Tantasques does not have a Nipmuc translation in the Nipmuc Dictionary I saw. Next to the word it says no translation.

David "Tall Pine" White is the keeper and instructor of the language in the 21st century and anyone interested can learn more about David White and the Nipmuc Language and people at the following link. Just paste it into your browser.

BY the way Peter Congrats on 150 K hits.

Thanks Peter
Thanks Peter for takiking a picture of such an awesome work of nature. Especially since those people vandalized something that took so long to create and now nobody else will have a chance to enjoy it. Jerks

How do you know the Black Lab didn't do it?

Dogs don't play video games..
The black Labrador didn't have that guilty look, he had more of a disgusted look on his face (first).
He was not the kind of dog who would play video games, he looked too intelligent to be doing that. He actually followed me and had that "take me with you, I had it with these people" look on his face!
No, it couldn't have been the dog!

Tantasques
Possible Nipmuc meanings for Tantasques

There is a somewhat similarly pronounced word:
"Tamesques" which is "muskrat,"

An early historian thought it might be a corruption of "Tantiquieson" which means "Mohegan Captain",

and Levi Chase of the Quinabaug Historical Society, leaflet 7, thought it translated as "between the breast-shaed hills" but offers no linguistic breakdown of how he derived that.
