Got Propane?

If you need to fill your tank or if you are looking for a propane delivery company, here are some names of local companies and their prices.
Owning your propane tank puts you in the driver seat; you can shop around for the best price.
Back in 1998, I paid &889.00 for my 500 gallon tank. If you own your own tank you don’t need to enter into a “Propane Supply Agreement and Equipment Lease” contract. Such contracts require you to buy from the same company and pay a surcharge if you don’t use a certain amount of propane and there is also a charge if you change suppliers for picking up the tank and another charge to install the tank from the new supplier. With the lower price of propane if you own your tank, you can save money in the long run after the initial investment. I started saving money after only five seasons. With today’s higher cost of Propane, it would only take three seasons to pay off your own tank with the savings.
My house is small and well insulated. Four hundred gallons usually keep me warm through the cold season and I only need one fill a year.

I usually make five calls and who ever has the lowest price I choose to fill my 500 gallon above ground tank. A 500 gallon tank holds 400 gallons as tanks can only be filled up to 80% of their capacity.

This year, I called the following companies (in alphabetical order) and they quoted me the following prices:

$2.05 per gallon;
Amerigas Propane, 1162 Park St, Palmer, MA 01069, phone(413) 283 7674.
When I called, I tried to lock-in the price of $2.05 and even offered to drive to Palmer and pay for it right away. The lady refused to lock-in the quoted price and stated that I would be charged what ever the price would be on the day of the delivery. The last three years, they were willing to lock-in the price. Three years ago, they actually charged me more than what we agreed on. After I complained three times, they finally gave me a refund into my account. I was kind of forced to get the tank filled by them the following year to get my refund. Their price was competitive the last three years.

$2.41 per gallon;
Arrow Gas, 225 North Liberty Street, Belchertown, MA 01007, phone (413) 283 6791.
If you have not bought from this company before, they request a system check. The check is free but involves checking the entire system, including the instalation inside your home. It is an inconvenience as you have to sit at home and wait for them. No other company had this requirement.

$2.09 per gallon;
High Grade Gas Service, 19 Middle River Drive, Stafford Springs, CT 06076, phone (860) 684 5071.
One phone call and immediately I got a quote. I asked if they would lock-in the price if I would bring a check right away and they agreed. It was that easy!

$?.?? per gallon;
Mocko J & Son Inc., 250 Orcutville Road, Stafford Springs, CT 06076, phone (860) 684 3012.
I talked to Elisabeth, she had to find out what the price would be and would call me back. I asked her when she would call back and she stated that she would call back the same day. This was Wednesday, November 3rd. I have not heard from her yet... She did not call back!

$2.899 per gallon;
Osterman Propane, 47 Hook Street, Southbridge, MA01550, phone (508) 764 2233.
Osterman was the company that installed my tank and hooked it up to my furnace. The first two years I had them fill up my tank. Their price jumped thereafter and I got much cheaper gas somewhere else.
It was very difficult to get a price from them. I made 5 phone calls and talked eventually to Mitch Smith, salesman. He quoted me the price stated above ($2.899 per gallon, 400 gallons into the tank I own).
With Bernanke’s announcement of “QE2” this past Wednesday, energy prices are guaranteed to rise sharply over the winter and will stay there. Buying Propane sooner than later will save you money!
