Long time in the making, it started on this day in the year of 1980. Just three days before Christmas, Earl Johnson, one of the selectmen of Holland, signed a 12 plus acre piece of property owned by the Inhabitants of the town over to Doris L. Proulx, his mother in law.
It was Monday, December 22, 1980, and the deed signed by Earl Johnson, claims that, “the forgoing instrument to be the free act and deed of the Inhabitants of the Town of Holland.” Nothing is further from the truth, the conveyance was unauthorized by the Inhabitants and outside the law.

However, the timing was perfect; just three days before Christmas. Who would pay attention?

Who would know that Doris L Proulx was in fact Earl Johnson’s mother in law?

Only few people knew, and nobody dared to do anything about it; Earl Johnson already ruled with an iron fist as one of the selectmen and most members of our community knew what he does to his opponents.

It took a brave man, James Foley, to clean up the pigsty Mr. Johnson modeled our town hall into to feel comfortable. Foley did some cleaning up of Johnson’s pigsty. The ensuing official document titled D.D. 111 report revealed that the Johnson family not only failed to pay the - already ridiculous low - price of $1,200 listed on the deed for the property, nor did the Johnson’s pay property taxes on the 12 acre plus parcel for more then a decade. Another individual closely working under Earl Johnson ended up being incarcerated, and Earl Johnson resigned as tax assessor to avoid being investigated by the State Ethics Commission (only officials still in office are subject to being investigated,) the Holland Blog reported about this in the piece, Earl Johnson resigned, the D.D.111 Scandal.

While Mr. Johnson perfected his sinister scheme over the years, culminating in the illegal construction of two homes for two of his sons with the help of his puppets serving on the Zoning Board of Appeals and Planning Board, he denied others their fundamental rights of ownership.
