It wasn‘t the perfect day to attend a fishing derby. The Holland Rod and Gun club attracted 28 participants who paid the $10 fee to participate. Not a fisher myself, I learned by talking two a group of young men from Palmer that they saw it as an opportunity to “get away from their ladies” for the day. At the end however, the “ladies” beat the guys as the reader will learn. The nice setting of the Holland Rod and Gun club located on Union Road features its own pond around which the fishers launched their bait.
The wind was not favorable at times to reach the deep waters and the temperatures were on the lower side for the middle of May. At 13:01 hours Malcolm Sedlak, a resident from Union, Connecticut, signaled the end of the derby by blowing the horn on his pickup truck. Ronnie Jalbert from Ludlow won first prize with his top catch that measured 16-3/4 inches. His prize money was $50. Second prize with 14” was a woman, Mrs. Nina Thacher who walked away with $30, and third prize was another woman, Brenda Belanger, who got $20 for the third longest fish.
I was surprised to find one of the
01521.COM campaign signs underneath a piece of plywood in the back of Malcolm Sedlak‘s pickup truck. He found it down the road on the way to the derby he said. “The wind must have blown it away,” he said. Malcolm gave it to me. I will return it to the rightful owner. Thanks Malcolm for picking up the “lost” campaign sign.
