Become an MVP Community! Grant Funding Available for Climate Change Planning and Action

The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs’ (EEA) Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) program provides grant funding to cities and towns to complete climate change vulnerability assessments, develop action-oriented resiliency plans, and to implement priority actions. As shown in the map below, over 300 Massachusetts’ communities have become an “MVP Community” through participation in the MVP planning process and are now eligible for MVP Action Grants to implement specific actions identified during the planning process during future funding rounds.

The process of becoming an “MVP Community” must be directed by a “Certified MVP Provider” to ensure personnel are properly trained in using the Community Resilience Building Framework. CEI has five certified providers with diverse areas of expertise to cover the range of infrastructure and environmental topics you may encounter during the planning process.

MVP Planning Grants are available to support municipalities to complete climate change vulnerability assessments and resiliency planning using the Community Resilience Building Framework, to assess vulnerability to a full range of climate change impacts, including temperature changes, extreme weather, sea level rise, inland flooding, changes in precipitation, and other impacts, across multiple sectors of the municipality.

Funding: $15,000+ per municipality, no cash match required.

Application Deadline: June 6, 2021

MVP Action Grants are available to “MVP Communities” to implement priority climate adaptation actions identified during the planning process to address climate change impacts resulting from extreme weather, sea level rise, inland and coastal flooding, severe heat, and other climate impacts. Projects that propose nature-based solutions or strategies that rely on green infrastructure or conservation and enhancement of natural systems to improve community resilience will receive higher scores.

Funding: To be determined, however previously, applicants could request up to $400,000 with awards ranging from $10,000-$400,000. Applicants must provide at least 25% match as either cash or in-kind.

Application Deadline: May 7, 2021
